Bollywood Badshah Shahrukh Khan will now be the goodwill ambassador for Republic of Korea to India.

Shahrukh Khan is now set to become the public diplomacy ambassador to India, which for all practical purposes means goodwill ambassador, Joon-gyu Lee, ambassador of Republic of Korea, said in Kolkata on Friday. Khan incidentally is Kolkata’s brand ambassador to the outside world.

Lee was here in connection with an interactive session on “India-Korea Relations: Past, Present and Future” organised jointly by Calcutta University and Embassy of Republic of Korea.

"We had made an offer to renowned Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan for goodwill ambassador and he had accepted it. Now, we are discussing about the place and date of a ceremony to formally announce it. The agreement with the actor would be for one year initially but may be extended further,” said Lee. He however clarified that there is no monetary involvement in this appointment.

He said, “Ever since the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed between India and South Korea in 2010, the two-way trade has grown substantially Our President, Park Geun-hye, is likely to visit India by early next year to take forward the bilateral relations to a new height. The bilateral between the two countries stood at $18.8 billion last year and it is expected to touch $40 billion mark by 2015. The proposed $12 billion project in Orissa by Korean steel major Posco would significantly contribute to this target and be the “largest foreign direct investment” by a South Korean company in India. We also look forward to opening more Korean cultural centres (KCC) in various states in India.”
