By Our Correspondent/KOLKATA, 30 June: Banglar Bari, a proposed housing project being worked out by the West Bengal Government, will enable people living in slums on government land to own a 285-ft flat each in a G+3 holding. Each family will have to pay only Rs 50,000 for a flat, announced Mr Firhad Hakim, the state Minister for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, at the Valedictory Session of the CII-organised Conference on Future Cities. “The idea is two-fold: First, it is to make sure people are not forced to live in slums and unauthorized colonies, and the second is to create extra green space,” Mr Hakim said, adding that the proposal would be put up at the next Cabinet meeting for approval. “For me, a future city should enable better urban living by addressing the present problems like urban mobility, assured supply of quality utilities like water and electricity, good sanitation, solid waste management accessible and affordable social infrastructure like health care and education and responsive governance,” the Minister said. “We at the state Government will be happy to welcome industry to partner us in our endeavor of creating Future Cities. I assure you of our complete cooperation and support,” he said, adding that given the State’s thrust on using compactors for waste management, there is enough scope for investment in compact manufacturing units in the state. Mr Umesh Chowdhary, Chairman, CII Eastern Region & Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Group, and Mr Subhas C Sethi, Chairman, CII Eastern Region Infrastructure Subcommittee; also addressed the Valedictory Session. ‘ATM Card to serve as Kolkata Railway token as well’ Earlier, at a Session titled Transport Infrastructure – Nerve of Future City, Mr Vishwesh Chaubey, General Manager, Metro Railway, Kolkata & Chairman, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, said Metro Railway is currently in talks with Axis Bank to develop something which will double up as an ATM card and one which can be used for entering Metro railway stations. Aside from the technological part, Metro Railway is also discussing the revenue sharing model with the bank, Mr Chaubey added. Such a card will not only ensure efficient operations in metro stations remove long queues , but will also require fewer booking clerks required in stations, he said, adding that this will lead to substantial cost saving, he said.
